The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) brings together life sciences companies and research universities to collaborate on efforts to improve human health in the U.S. and around the world. In 2018, the IBRI chose KERAMIDA to provide on-site safety compliance leadership resulting in the development and implementation of a state-of-the-art Health and Safety program that incorporated pharmaceutical industry and management system best practices. In addition, KERAMIDA provided health and safety expertise and review during the planning of the new IBRI facility.

Health & Safety Programs Development

KERAMIDA reviewed the IBRI’s existing Health & Safety programs and prepared a Health & Safety Audit Report to document any potential regulatory findings and included effective management practice recommendations for corrective action. In addition to assessing current programming, KERAMIDA produced a Health & Safety training program for visitors, contractors, new employee orientation, and for on-going employee training.

Recognizing that making Health and Safety a priority requires a team effort, KERAMIDA established an IBRI Safety Committee to sustain and build upon the Health & Safety program. In 2018, KERAMIDA began performing on-site monthly safety inspection of the IBRI facilities. KERAMIDA then provided the IBRI a summary of the findings of these inspections and worked through the Safety Committee to facilitate effective corrections.

KERAMIDA continues to provide on-call consultation and assistance on an as-needed basis. This includes e-mail and phone support, and in-person site visits to address Health & Safety concerns or to be present during site audits or inspections. Finally, KERAMIDA continues to recommend strategic initiatives to enhance the IBRI’s Health & Safety programs and goals.

The IBRI’s current laboratories and offices are housed in approximately 20,000 square feet of leased space in the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Biotechnology Research and Training Center in Indianapolis. The IBRI will eventually occupy 68,000 square feet of the new Advanced Research and Innovation Building in 16 Tech, an urban innovation district being developed in the historic Riverside neighborhood of Indianapolis. The new IBRI facility will include office, innovation, collaboration and laboratory space.

KERAMIDA’s health and safety professionals participated in planning and review of health and safety aspects of the new IBRI facility, including consultation with building design engineers. KERAMIDA continues to work with IBRI on the design of the new facility.
