GHG Reduction Strategy & Sustainability Reporting for Fortune 500 Tech Company

Overview:

KERAMIDA assisted a Confidential Tech Client with strategic sustainability reporting consulting, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction strategies, Scope 3 GHG emissions calculations, and climate scenario analysis. The Client is a leading American public multinational corporation that designs and manufactures digital telecom products and services.

Project Details:

Strategic Sustainability Reporting

In 2020, KERAMIDA evaluated the feasibility of including SASB disclosures and TCFD recommended disclosures in the Client’s future sustainability reporting.

As part of this project, KERAMIDA performed a Gap Analysis on the Client’s 2019 Corporate Responsibility Report and 2019 CDP climate change disclosure, and used the SASB Standard for the Semiconductor industry. Also included, was the Client’s EHS Policy and information published on the Client’s Environmental Responsibility webpage.

KERAMIDA’s Gap Analysis findings consisted of an annotated SASB index and annotated TCFD index. These, and a peer benchmarking element, informed an Integration Roadmap that KERAMIDA created to be used by the Client’s reporting team.

Climate Scenario Analysis

The TCFD Gap Analysis identified the absence of a Climate-related Scenario Analysis from the Client’s strategic planning efforts, so in July 2020, KERAMIDA’s Sustainability team began assisting a cross functional team comprised of the Client’s leadership in the process. KERAMIDA completed a climate scenario analysis using publicly available data, proprietary data provided by the Client, and climate modeling tools appropriate to the Client’s timeline for analysis. KERAMIDA’s analysis provided insight on future transition risks (price of carbon) and physical risks (water scarcity, high heating days, and coastal flooding) under three future scenarios.

GHG Reduction Strategies

The greenhouse gas reduction analysis consisted of evaluating and identifying GHG reduction opportunities in support of the Client’s 2025 GHG reduction goals for scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. Proposed recommendations include targeting infrastructure, equipment upgrades, contractual agreements with local utility companies to provide low carbon energy sources, and operational changes. Projected reductions were quantified as well as an evaluation of payback period.  Reduction opportunities were finally ranked in on a basis of degree of GHG mitigation and cost.

Scope 3 Emissions Calculations

KERAMIDA calculated the Scope 3 GHG emissions for the global operations of the Client for all scope 3 emission sources specified by the GHG protocol which include emission sources ranging from fuel and energy related activities, to upstream and downstream transportation and distribution-related emissions. KERAMIDA verified the applicability and relevance of each proposed emission source as well as the non-applicability or irrelevance of the remaining Scope 3 emission sources. KERAMIDA assisted in the evaluation and obtainment of client data to complete the calculations by methodologies recognized by the GHG protocol.
